Harpa works as a lawyer at the National Energy Authority. She travels quite a lot and has a nice taste in wines, food, places and culture.

So Harpa, what have you been up to lately?
I assume you are curious about my travelling lately. In that area I have been keeping pretty busy. I went to London, Berlin, Stockholm, Costa Rica, Arizona, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco over the last months.

In your travel to the states, what was the most exciting thing of all to experience?
I guess it was exploring Arizona, there are so many interesting things to do there like hiking in the red rocks around Sedona, trying the natural water slides in Slide Rock State Park and experiencing Grand Canyon.

Can you recommend something for us in LA or San Francisco?
I loved Santa Monica in LA, it is both for those who want to shop and those who love a good meal with good wine, oh and the lovely beach is just there! For San Francisco, I can only say that I loved the city! The Piers, the Victorian homes in the hills and of course all the great shops and restaurants. I also loved going to the ball park where I saw the Giants play, I have to add that it was my first time at a baseball game.

You used to live in France right? Anything that is a must see for our readers?
I traveled all over in France, mostly though in Southern France. I took all my visitors to Collioure, which is a tiny little village by the sea with all its history of young painters who lived there and came to be the most famous in French art history. I also fell in love with Carcassonne, which is a little medieval town surrounded by the walls of a fortress.

Favorite airline?
I guess it is the low budget airline Ryan Air. Not that I don´t like luxury but because they are a fairly easy going. They once read the funniest welcome speech I have ever heard on a flight that concerned throwing people of the plane when airborne and other suggestions which were equally ridiculous.

Who should we interview next?
I would have to say my mom. It sounds horribly corny but she has been all around the world and to so many places off the beaten track.

Anything else?
I strongly recommend traveling to Costa Rica. The landscape, the white beaches, the clear blue sea, the crazy activities and the cheap living is something anyone would love.

P.s. love your web-site!

We have visited this club in Berlin, then the name was Bang Bang...

We have visited this club in Berlin, then the name was Bang Bang Club, now it’s called Levee.

How to get there?
There are 3 major airlines.

Icelandair, is the main international airline of Iceland. Currently serves 31 gateways in Europe, the USA and Canada.

Icelandexpress, offers daily low-fare flights between Reykjavík Iceland and destinations in Europe and United States.

SAS, has flights to Iceland from Oslo.

What should I do?
You can go horse riding, see whales, river rafting, snowmobiling, check out some concerts, geysers, claciers and volcanoes. Visit some of the Geo-Thermal Swimming pools, my favorite one is in Seltjarnarnes.

Check out Blue Lagoon on you way back to the airport or if your having layover in Iceland.

Shopping?
The main shopping street is Laugavegur, where you can also find some restaurants and cafés. Skólavörðustígur has range of souvenir and craft shops, the street runs up to Hallgrímskirkja (which has a great view over the city).

On Laugavegur we recommend:

KronKron

Kisan

Spútnik

There are two shopping malls, Kringlan and Smáralind.

Sales tax is always included in the price. You are entitled to claim back the tax if you spend 4.000 ISK or more in one shop.

Eat?
If your looking for budget, you should check out the Hot-Dog places, the pizza takeouts like Dominos or even the burger franchise Búllan. The Thai restaurants are also relatively cheap, you’ll get large portions at a good price. There are lots of cafés with free wi-fi, you get the best coffee and scones at Kaffismiðja Íslands.

For mid-range meals you have a lot to choose from like

Á næstu grösum

Austur India Fjelagid

The Sea Baron

Sushi Smiðjan

Fish Market

Sleep?

Reykjavik Downtown Hostel

Hotel Cabin Borgartuni 32.

High end

101 Hotel

Hilton Reykjavik Nordica

Hótel Holt

Drinks?

Reykjavik is considered to have a great nightlife. Bars are open until 1AM on weeknights, but most will stay open until 6-7AM on Friday and Saturday.

On the weekend, live music is easy to find in some of Reykjavík’s bars. During the day, be sure to pick up your free copy of the English-language magazine The Reykjavík Grapevine from one of the city’s cafés or restaurants for information on live music events for that evening (also available online).

Here are some bars/clubs we recommend in Reykjavik.

Kaffibarinn

Boston

Prikið
